About this deal

Of course, when it comes to training and race day nutrition, everyone’s stomach responds differently . What works for me might not work for you, and what works for you, might not work for me. You get the idea. The full list of ingredients is: Water, Maltodextrin (produced from partial hydrolyses of a special variety of Maize), Gelling Agents (Gellan Gum, Xanthan Gum ), Natural Flavouring, Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate), Preservatives (Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate), Sweetener (Acesulfame K), Sodium Chloride, Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid) for 69g of maltodextrin. That's a *very* expensive way to buy something that's akin to glucose syrup in nutritional value. (Maltrodextrin has pretty much same calorific content, slightly faster absorbtion than glucose). Top tip: buy these from Waitrose. In my local store they sell these with a 3 for 2 offer for all vitamin and well-being products. Ingredients. In addition to a carbohydrate source, you may see other ingredients on the label, including gelling agents like xanthan gum and gellan gum, which help with texture. Some gels may contain artificial sweeteners and colors, as well as additives and preservatives, which may be a downside if you prefer a more natural product.

If you’re new to energy gels, it’s recommended to take half of a gel with water during a training run and slowly increase the amount over several training days. Many reviewers agree that the gels are easy on the stomach and don’t cause any digestive discomfort during exercise. Strawberry kiwi is the only caffeinated flavor, providing 32 mg of caffeine from green tea extract. Lastly, there is a GO energy + electrolyte gel, that contains 118mg sodium, 9.5mg potassium and 1.5mg magnesium per gel, on top of the 22 grams of carbs. Every flavor is also gluten-free, though it’s unclear whether these gels are processed in a facility that also processes gluten.

Running gels may not be necessary for all runners, especially when exercising for shorter periods of time. These gels seem to be like marmite, you either love or hate them. I wasn’t a fan but I know lots of runners find these easy to take and tolerate during their races. One benefit to these gels is that they are very widely available and come in a range of flavours. They’re low in sodium so would benefit to be taken with an electrolyte drink and/or salt pill for salty sweaters!

Carbs per serving. Most energy gels have 20–25 grams of carbs per serving. The International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends consuming 30–60 grams of carbs per hour when exercising for longer than 1 hour. You may need to do a little number crunching to determine how many gels you’ll need to meet this recommendation ( 1). Maurten offers both caffeinated and non-caffeinated options, with the caffeinated gels containing 100 mg of caffeine per serving. The Aptonia Energy Gel is loaded with vitamins B1, B6, B12 and E, and zinc. David Caudery / Immediate Media Previously recommendations were that runners should consume 30-60g per hour, but now it is advised that with training, we should be aiming for 40-70g per hour… or more!I struggle with most supplements in terms of taste. These are actually quite palatable with my favourite being grapefruit. The texture is a bit gammy but I just try not to think about it. They do appear to prolong my energy during a workout and I have chronic fatigue.”
