About this deal

Skandar is a teenage boy with muddy brown hair, white skin and hazel-brown eyes. His height is described to be on the shorter side. It is said that Skandar looks a lot like his sister Kenna, to the point he is mistaken for her twin even though Skandar is one year younger. For a mutation, Skandar has a Spirit Wielder's blaze on his arm. A magnificent book. I raced through it – at turns enthralled, delighted, amazed. It’s everything I could have wanted and more. No doubt this book is going to fly.’ – Hannah Gold, author of The Last Bear Epic, unforgettable and endlessly exciting, Steadman’s masterful sequel soars even higher than her debut.' – Aisling Fowler, author of the Fireborn seriesBut as Skandar and his friends enter their second year at the Eyrie, a new threat arises. Skandar and her mounted Swan and began a flight, which Skandar found quite uncomfortable. During the journey, they passed over the White Unicorn and saw many Mainlanders going to take helicopters to the Island. Skandar thought of Kenna, and this life she would never have, and also of writing to her if he opened the Hatchery Door. That day Kenna had missed Nina Kazama becoming Commodore of Chaos—the first Mainlander in history to win the Chaos Cup. She’d acted like she wasn’t bothered. But when she’d shut herself away in her bedroom, she’d watched hundreds of clips of Nina and her unicorn, Lightning’s Mistake, passing under the finish arch. And she’d realized she didn’t really belong with her new friends, that she was only pretending. A magnificent book. I raced through it – at turns enthralled, delighted, amazed. It’s everything I could have wanted and more. No doubt this book is going to fly.’ – Hannah Gold, author of The Last Bear

Instructor O'Sullivan: A spirit wielder pin. Although you'll always be an honorary water wielder, of course.

Steadman – eBook Details The First Rider tells Skandar, “‘It only takes a few good riders to change things’” after Skandar and his friends work together to find the bone staff. (p. 438) Discuss other books you’ve read where a group of friends work together to do great things and save the world from evil. Flo tells Skandar, “‘Something about you makes me feel braver.’” (p. 208) Give some examples of how Skandar feels about his friends. What are some of the things they do to help him? How would the story have been different if he did not have his friends to support him? Why do you think the author chose to include intermittent chapters from Kenna’s point of view? On the Mainland, the two siblings were close—but when Kenna sees Skandar and his unicorn, Scoundrel, together, she observes that they share “a bond that went deeper than brother and sister.” (p. 4) Talk about how Skandar’s choices throughout the story support this idea. Skandar and the Phantom Rider: the spectacular sequel to

The next morning, whilst in the Earth training ground, Amber and the Threat Quartet rode up to the Quartet and Bobby noticed Amber's star mutation, saying, 'you've got something gross on your head'. Amber then makes fun of Skandar for wearing his mum's scarf and she boasts about how her father died 'heroically in a fight with about a hundred wild unicorns', she then calls him pathetic and rides away, followed by the rest of her Quartet. Instructor Webb announced that they would be learning about sand shields that would be useful in sky battles before showing them how to do it. Skandar tried to summon the Earth element but Scoundrel resisted and kept trying to summon Spirit, eventually Scoundrel went wild and threw Skandar off of him. Instructor Webb walked over and saw something on Skandar's arm, a spirit mutation, but he just thought it was a burn. Suddenly, Joby grabbed Skandar and told Instructor Webb that he must go to the Healer treehouses immediately. The next morning, Skandar went to the Trough, where rider's ate all their meals, he saw Gabriel's mutation, which Skandar thought made him look like a Greek statue, he overheard people gossiping about Joby Worsham, the instructor of Mainlander classes for people like Skandar. People were saying that was barely human, like a ghost, Flo told him that people only gossiped about Worsham because his unicorn was dead. The Mainlander Hatchlings went up to Instructor Worsham's treehouse, some of them quite scared. He seemed not as scary as the Hatchlings thought he even let them call him by his first name. He told them the story of how his unicorn, Winter's Phantom, was killed and Skandar couldn't help but feel bad for him. Skandar returned to the treehouse to find Mitchell playing with his Chaos Cards, he opened up about how the reason he didn't like Skandar was because of his father and their family name.

The tour ended down by the Hatchling stables, Skandar, Bobby, Mitchell and Flo discussed what to do the next day when Skandar crossed the Fault Lines because since he was a Spirit Wielder all the lines would ignite, they had to cause a distraction.
