About this deal

His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach.

My kid's grandparents gave my kid a Roald Dahl collection for Christmas, so now I'm reading the stories out loud. This was the book where I'm starting to regret the whole thing. Dahl's disgust at beards was the inspiration for Mr. Twit. As he stated, he penned The Twits in an effort to "do something against beards". [1] His biographer Michael Rosen recalls the first time the pair met, Dahl leant across to Rosen's son Joe and said of his father's beard: "It's probably got this morning's breakfast in it. And last night's dinner. And old bits of rubbish, any old stuff that he's come across. You might even find a bicycle wheel in it". [1] They also keep a family of pet monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps. The Twits, who are retired circus trainers, are trying to create the first upside-down monkey circus. They will always demand the monkeys stand on their heads for hours on end. We aren't currently taking new book specific requests but we'll put your suggestion on our list for future ideas. There is an editable version of this resource, or you might want to have a look at our fabulous Create tool which will give you access to our lovely illustrations and templates. You can even upload your own images to use! :) And what do you think of that ghastly garden? Mrs Twit was the gardener. She was very good at growing thistles and stinging-nettles. ‘I always grow plenty of spiky thistles and plenty of stinging-nettles,’ she used to say. ‘They keep out nasty nosey little children.’ Near the house you can see Mr Twit’s work-shed. To one side there is The Big Dead Tree. It never has any leaves on it because it’s dead. And not far from the tree, you can see the monkey cage. There are four monkeys in it. They belong to Mr Twit. You will hear about them later.Netflix‘s animated film adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s book The Twits is scheduled to come to the streaming service in 2025. Dahl once again serves up another irreverently funny story for the more astute and world-weary young readers of the world. The Twits is a sound reminder that the world is full of mostly awful people who will do mostly awful things to other people, like you for instance little boy and/or girl. So, as an adult, all I could think of is, " Dahl, what were you on??" Mr. Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever. The Twits are ugly people - through and through. They think nothing of animal neglect or outright abuse. They are horrible to each other and everyone around them. A summary is a short retelling of a story or idea. It does not include every detail but focuses on the main points.

Mr and Mrs Twit are extremely nasty, so the Muggle-Wump monkeys and the Roly-Poly bird hatch an ingenious plan to give them just the ghastly surprise they deserve! Some of the modern versions of Roald Dahl’s books include information about his life. Could you use this to write a biography to help others to learn about him? I really was not taken with the story, but it wasn't terrible. Give me James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or The Fantastic Mr Fox any day. Other books by Roald Dahl THE ENORMOUS CROCODILE ESIO TROT FANTASTIC MR FOX THE GIRAFFE AND THE PELLY AND ME THE MAGIC FINGER For older readers THE BFG BOY: TALES OF CHILDHOOD BOY and GOING SOLO CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF CHARLIE AND MR WILLY WONKA DANNY THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE GOING SOLO JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH MATILDA En Los cretinos vamos a conocer a la señora y el señor Cretino, un horrible matrimonio que pasa los días molestándose entre ellos, compitiendo por ver quien hace la jugarreta más grande al otro. The idea of The Twits was triggered by Dahl's desire to 'do something against beards', because he had an acute hatred of them. The first sentence of the story is, 'What a lot of hairy-faced men there are around nowadays'.

Jersey City, New Jersey, USA. ISSN 0015-6914. Archived from the original on 28 February 2023 . Retrieved 27 February 2023. Mrs Twit fainted. Mr Twit got out of bed and fetched a jug of cold water. He poured the water over Mrs Twit’s head to revive her. The frog crawled up from under the sheets to get near the water. It started jumping about on the pillow. Frogs love water. This one was having a good time. When Mrs Twit came to, the frog had just jumped on to her face. This is not a nice thing to happen to anyone in bed at night. She screamed again. The Twits still holds up as one of my favourite Roald Dahl books. Dahl’s speciality is over-the-top baddies and he delivers with Mr and Mrs Twit who’re as grotesque as can be. Quentin Blake’s illustrations are perfect as always - his art is as inseparable from Dahl’s prose as John Tenniel’s is from Lewis Carroll’s. Flood, Alison (9 January 2012). "Roald Dahl stamps honour classic children's author". The Guardian . Retrieved 18 October 2022. Hairy Faces What a lot of hairy-faced men there are around nowadays. When a man grows hair all over his face it is impossible to tell what he really looks like. Perhaps that’s why he does it. He’d rather you didn’t know. Then there’s the problem of washing. When the very hairy ones wash their faces, it must be as big a job as when you and I wash the hair on our heads. So what I want to know is this. How often do all these hairy-faced men wash their faces? Is it only once a week, like us, on Sunday nights? And do they shampoo it? Do they use a hairdryer? Do they rub hair- tonic in to stop their faces from going bald? Do they go to a barber to have their hairy faces cut and trimmed or do they do it themselves in front of the bathroom mirror with nail-scissors? I don’t know. But next time you see a man with a hairy face (which will probably be as soon as you step out on to the street) maybe you will look at him more closely and start wondering about some of these things.

After your class have read chapters 22-27, they write a summary of Muggle-Wump’s clever plan. They must remember to include all of the main points. What a lot of hairy-faced men there are around these days. When a man grows hair all over his face it is impossible to tell what he really looks like. Perhaps that's why he does it.He'd rather you didn't know. There are lots of spelling mistakes in this extract! Your class will begin by highlighting all the mistakes and then write the correct spelling.
