About this deal

The original Top Gun got a pretty nice upconversion here, I feel. Film grain is kept to a fair minimum, it's definitely sharper than I remember from the Blu-Ray cut, and it's brighter than before. Overall, worth the extra money for the 4k. English Dolby Atmos, French-Parisian, German, Italian, Portuguese-Brazilian, Russian, Spanish-Castilian, Spanish-Latin American Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, Japanese TV Tokyo Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo Surround, Japanese Fuiji TV Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono I'm not going to review the movies here. Someone else has already done that, I imagine. I'm only commenting on the 4K experience.

Note that if you redeem the Digital code, you also get access to an additional feature via desktop and mobile devices (depending on the Digital service): The new one looks great, naturally. It was filmed in the modern digital era, so a 4k release was always on the table. I never saw it in the theaters, so I can't say if this was the original way of things... but all the fighter plan sequences are in 16:9 and the rest of the film is in 2.35:1. I found this somewhat distracting, and I really don't know exactly why they made this choice.Forging the Darkstar (HD, 8 min) takes a closer look at the scramjet prototype seen at the beginning of the film and how it plays a role in the story. Hell, even as CG effects improved, fighter plane movies were basically non-existent ( Stealth's a boat-load of flashy fun, but also a Box Office bomb that only further nailed this coffin), leaving Top Gun the defining movie for four decades, and many generations of viewers, becoming so mythical that nobody would even want to try to go near it. Breaking New Ground– We get a new perspective on the look, feel and filming of the movie. We’re introduced to new filming techniques and everything in between.

Extras: Language(s): English, Czech, French - Canadian, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Spanish - Castilian, Spanish - Latin American, Hard of Hearing Subtitles: English, Subtitles: English, Chinese - Cantonese - Hong Kong, Chinese - Mandarin - Simplified - PRC, Chinese - Mandarin - Traditional, Czech, Danish, Finnish, French - Canadian, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese - European, Romanian, Slovakian, Spanish - Castilian, Spanish - Latin American, Swedish, Thai., Interactive Menu, Screen ratio 1:1.78, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 5.1, Behind the Scenes, Bonus Footage Take the above comparison screengrabs for example but with a huge grain of salt: the top from the 4K Ultra HD disc and the bottom from the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition. Although both pictures were taken directly from the discs on a professionally calibrated system, seeing the images at their full HDR/WCG potential will depend on the capabilities of each viewer's screen. Nevertheless, the two images allow for just enough visible information to reflect the experience at home and be able to note the difference in contrast and the improvement in the overall color palette and timing. As with previous lossless mixes, much of the design is a front-heavy presentation, but rear activity comes alive during the dogfights, expanding the soundfield with the noise of F-14s screaming in the surrounds and echoing through the overheads. There are a couple moments when the jetplanes distinctly fly above the listening area and into view, but ultimately, the top heights do a majority of the leg work in widening and heightening the action. The real winner, in the end, are the memorable songs, filling not only the entire soundscape but also subtly bleeding into the sides and overheads for a satisfyingly good time. (Dolby Atmos Audio Rating: 80/100) Much of the character-driven drama takes priority with precise, clear dialogue that remains that way above the commotion, allowing audiences to enjoy every emotional moment and hear every inflection in each of the performances. Impressively, those quieter, dialogue-heavy sequences are nonetheless layered with the commotion of people chattering all around in Penny's bar, or the busy commotion of military activity can be heard in the distance and from above while at school. Other such scenes taking place indoors even have a natural light echoing effect from the characters talking to each other. Imaging continuously feels broad and spacious with an exceptional sense of presence, as an assortment of noises fluidly travels between the three channels and into the front heights, creating a highly-engaging half-dome wall of sound that's sustained to the very end. At the same, an outstanding mid-range exhibits superb detailing and distinction in the upper frequencies during the loudest segments while the score delivers striking definition in the orchestration with warmth and amazing fidelity while bleeding all around. Masterclass with Tom Cruise– Cruise and selected cast members discuss the project as well as Cruise’s filmography.Forging the Darkstar– A look at the aircraft from the movie, what went into it and filming at China Lake. EXCLUSIVE Masterclass with Tom Cruise (HD, 49 min), originally recorded at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, is a conversation with the actor, his career and this new sequel.
