About this deal

As the screenshot shows, this specific kit of memory is composed of Samsung B-Die ICs arranged in a dual-rank configuration. This refers to the fact that there are ICs located on both sides of the PCB. In the case of our 16 GB module, there are 8 on each side for a total of 16 x 1 GB ICs. The SPD read also shows us that this PCB is running the B1 layout, which we confirmed with a physical inspection. W G.Skill recently released a few new special kits of DDR4 that feature super-fast XMP profiles and including one that is dual rank. Within the enthusiast PC community, there’s been a whole lot of buzz about dual-rank memory modules and how they offer superior performance for some benchmarks and games. Simply put, this means there are ICs on both sides of the memory PCB for better interleaving and thus better performance. We reached out to G.Skill and they sent us their new dual-rank flagship product, the unbelievably fast 2 x 16 GB 4000 CL16-19-19 Trident Z Royal. Specifications and Features

The Geekbench 4 comparison shows the magic of this kit. As we’ve been talking about this whole time, faster interleaving from dual rank equates to faster performance. That statement is proven nicely with the total score result. The Trident Z Royal Elite, which is available in both gold and silver colors, features the same polished alumimum heat spreader as the vanilla Trident Z Royal. However, G.Skill has revamped the design a bit. The heat spreader on the Trident Z Royal Elite flaunts a gorgeous crystalline pattern that does justice to the crystalline RGB light bar. According to G.Skill, the new heat spreader is product of 76 chiseled facets.Designed for performance, G.SKILL desktop memory is engineered from hand-selected components and rigorously tested for stability and compatibility.... Lastly, we examined the performance using a few of the memory benchmark tests offered within the SiSoftware Sandra suite. The flagship product, known as Sandra, is a powerful suite of many different benchmarks used to evaluate the computer performance of all major components, including the processor, graphics, memory, and disk. This particular kit of memory comes with an XMP profile of 4000MHz CL17-17-17 which is rated at 1.35 V. The manufacturing progress of Samsung B-DIE memory is clearly evident. Just a few years ago this XMP profile would not be possible without the use of higher volts and considerably more relaxed timings.First up, I used AIDA64 Cache and Memory Benchmark. Specifically speaking, “Memory bandwidth benchmarks (Memory Read, Memory Write, Memory Copy) measure the maximum achievable memory data transfer bandwidth. The code behind these benchmark methods are written in Assembly and they are extremely optimized for every popular AMD, Intel, and VIA processor core variants by utilizing the appropriate x86/x64, x87, MMX, MMX+, 3DNow!, SSE, SSE2, SSE4.1, AVX, AVX2, and AVX-512 instruction set extension.” (source: www.aida64.com) Although the Z490 AQUA has been expressly verified to work with this memory, there is no guarantee that the XMP profile will work. However, despite the impressive speed and latency rating for 2 x 16 GB, we’re happy to report that we had absolutely no trouble with the XMP profile. With all of the bios settings on auto, we were able to simply boot the XMP profile without any tweaking needed. Next, we used Geekbench 4 to test our memory profiles. It’s one of the best synthetic benchmarks at predicting the ‘real-world’ performance. This benchmark utilizes 25 unique sub-benchmarks of varying complexity and then collates them to create an overall picture of performance. Trident Z Royal is the newest member of the Trident Z family. Featuring a crown jewel design and meticulously crafted to display just the right amount of light refraction, the crystalline light bar scatters RGB colors in a magnificent display of LED lighting. Mirroring the high-class light bar design, polished aluminum heatspreaders of gold or silver colors cool the memory modules in the classic Trident Z tri-fin design.

The next benchmarks we will examine are ones centered around 3D rendering and games. The Futuremark 3D Mark suite of benchmarks is a real-time graphical rendering benchmark that also contains an element of memory and CPU testing. For each of the benchmarks from Fire Strike to Time Spy, we will only examine the CPU/memory testing portion and disregard the graphical test elements.Today’s review is part of G.Skill’s new high-performance, low-latency memory series. The new lineup of ultra-fast memory consists of two main options: 4000 CL16 (2 x 16 GB) and 4400 CL16 (2 x 8 GB). Both of the kits are available across the Trident Z Royal, Trident Z RGB, and Ripjaws V series. These new memory specifications provide increased efficiency with low latency at exceptionally high-frequency speeds. That makes a total of 6 different specifications, all of which feature Samsung B-Die ICs. It’s worth mentioning that G.Skill also introduced a few other kits with the same tight CL16 timings, but with reduced frequencies. G.Skill isn't tailoring the Trident Z Royal Elite portfolio to slower memory frequencies. The memory starts at DDR4-3600 and peaks at DDR4-5333 to rip through even the most taxing RAM benchmarks. Capacity will depend on the memory frequency of your choosing, but generally-speaking, the Trident Z Royal Elite comes in densities between 16GB (2x8GB) and 64GB (2x32GB or (4x16GB). Below are the test system and resulting memory speeds that will be used to evaluate the memory and run the benchmarks. Test Setup Although we strive to present precise and comprehensive information at the time of publication, a small number of items may contain typographic or photographic errors. Whether you opt for the silver or gold finish, the modules will look great once installed on a motherboard, and the RGB lighting is but a bonus. I'm not one who usually finds RGB lighting on hardware like RAM and headsets appealing, but there's something about how G.SKILL designed the diffusers with the aluminum spreaders.

With considerable risk of damaging the memory and voiding the warranty, you might be asking yourself if it’s worth it. In the graph below, we can see a gain of up to 25% for the memory score and a gain of 16% for the multicore score. For daily tasks and even moderately-competitive benchmarking, the risk may not be worth the reward. Geekbench 3 Benchmark ConclusionDDR4 PCBs are broken down into three major layout designs. The older design, called A0, has the ICs spaced out evenly on the PCB and can limit the maximum frequency achievable. The newer A1 and A2 designs (which are effectively the same) place the ICs closer together and closer to the PCB connection edge. The A2-style PCB has become the new unofficial industry standard because it allows for higher frequencies and generally better compatibility. As a result, motherboard manufacturers are now routing memory traces to coincide with the IC placement on A2-style PCBs.
