This is the third of Lanzmann's films to include the Theresienstadt Camp. The first is 'A visitor From The Living' (1999) an interview with Maurice Rossel, an international red cross official who, after the Nazi's revamped one small part of the camp for inspection, gave Theresienstadt a glowing report. The second is 'The Last Of The Unjust' (2013) a 220 minute interview with the unique and remarkable realist Benjamin Murmelstein, the last and only surviving president of the Theresienstadt Jewish Council. In the context of the Holocaust Murmelstein's immortal statements, 'you can condemn me but you can't judge me' and 'they were martyrs not saints' will stay with me forever. Though exonerated of collaboration he was forced to live in exile and was buried in un-consecrated ground. My camera is very large—it’s a spectacle that you have to collaborate with. Usually people are looking at it and wondering, “What is this foolish thing, and why does this guy want to take my picture?” You have to put the film holder in, you have to pull the dark slide out. It’s a big deal to take the picture. The camera is more like a piece of old furniture than it is a technological machine. It’s a box that’s made of wood. It’s old-fashioned and clunky-looking. I think that’s comfortable for people: the clunkiness of it and my affection for the process. To be honest, I am not interested in gender related issues that much. I never tend to think in this way, but since you ask, my favourite composers happen to be male composers - Handel, Brahms, Schubert, Mussorgsky, Haydn, Mozart, Poulenc, Lutosławski, Ligeti...I also like Offenbach, Rossini, Kurt Weill, Cole Porter, Gilbert&Sullivan.
