Garmin Index™ BPM Smart Blood Pressure Monitor

You are into tech and want to wirelessly compile and export your health data. If you are already training and using Garmin smartwatches and scales, this blood pressure monitor is a shoo-in.The scale proved very popular at launch, and at the time of writing (April 2021), there’s a wait of between five and eight weeks for delivery. Design This was a long overdue move from Garmin. Its software may be a fitness and health powerhouse, but with one notable exception. It didn’t allow users to store blood pressure readings. Index BPM seems to be a product for those with medical conditions and the fact that Garmin is now releasing the Index BPM is a testament to how well they have done at penetrating the ‘mass market’ rather than their older markets for the athletically-minded. Garmin is one of the world’s leading tech companies and has developed a diverse portfolio of devices that span GPS navigation and fish finding to health and fitness wearables. Electrical engineer Gary Burrell partnered with Min Kao, a defense contractor to found Garmin in 1989. The company was initially called ProNav but later changed to Garmin using part of the first names of each founder. Garmin is probably due to refresh the Index Smart Scale as the S2 model that I have was always in need of some love even though it was only released just over 2 years ago. So it was a bit of a surprise to see that instead, Garmin could be entering Blood Pressure measurements for the first time. Whilst this product is linked to fitness, the biggest number of buyers by far will be in the general wellness space.

The cuff is only 320 grams but you will feel most of the weight coming from the OLED screen. The fabric cuff has a generous amount of fabric and looks like it can accommodate even the largest biceps. The overall build quality is sturdy and should reassure users that the cuff will last a long time. The BPM Chart zones (US chart) are slightly different to the one used in the UK by the NHS but I can live with that. (it would be great if we could change that ourselves or have a "country selector") Please note that this is a Garmin CIQ Widget to help users judge their rest condition before taking their blood pressure. It is not a medical product. The readings are only for reference and should not be used to diagnose, treat, alleviate or prevent any disease or symptom. Users should evaluate their personal health condition before use and seek the professional advice of their physician. The scale is fast; your weight is displayed on the crisp, bright screen almost immediately. By default you’ll also be shown your body composition stats and the weather, but if you prefer there’s also an option to show your weight only. Garmin Connect can build a comprehensive health profile with digital insights that can help you tailor your fitness routines. If you use the Garmin smartwatches, swimming or cycling devices, it will sync data from your device and provide a detailed breakdown of your physical activity. The Garmin Index 2 uses bioelectrical impedance to measure tissue types. Essentially, it runs a small current through your body (hence the need for bare feet), and different types of tissue cause different degrees of resistance. The scale measures weight and BMI, body fat percentage, skeletal muscle mass, bone mass, and body water. Skeletal muscle doesn't include the muscle in your heart, or the muscles that apply pressure to your organs and blood vessels.
