When it comes to size, the moto G50 is a hefty handset. It measures 16.49cm x 7.49cm x 0.89cm and weighs 192g. However, despite not being the lightest smartphone available, the moto G50 provides a solid grip overall. But donning a plastic design, it’s clearly a cheap handset.
The Moto G50 does not have ultra-deep colour, but looks perfectly good to my eyes. And, the clincher, its outdoors visibility is solid enough thanks to respectable maximum brightness.Performance-wise, the Moto G50 maintains its steady if unremarkable attitude. Negotiating menus and opening apps is reasonably swift, with the only slowdown noticeable when loading up games such as Call of Duty: Mobile. It catches up in the end but there are minor issues here when opening a new map, for instance. Paired with 4GB of RAM, the moto G50’s snapdragon 480 processor provides modest speeds that’ll suit the needs of most users. But if you plan on using this handset for compute-intensive activities like gaming or streaming, you might notice a laggier performance. The Motorola Moto G50 has a 6.5-inch LCD screen that has two hallmarks of the tight budget with which is was designed. It’s a 720p screen, not the 1080p kind you get with the Moto G G5, and it has a teardrop notch rather than the punch hole style considered more “current”, “stylish” or “expensive” by some. You get 64GB storage, the standard amount at this price. It’s enough to get buy for many, but you can also pop in a microSD card. Camera The front-facing selfie camera is a 13MP (f/2.2) affair and images taken aren’t the most detailed I’ve seen, though it’s perfectly usable for selfies and video calls. Motorola offers a single beautification slider, which is sensibly disabled by default (left), but I’ve turned it up to halfway (middle) and all the way (right) to give you an idea of the general impact. It looks like it’s smoothing only, as the marks of my skin gradually get airbrushed out of existence. As far as I can tell, video can only be captured at 1080p at 30fps – either that, or Motorola has hidden away the settings in a very hard-to-reach spot. Stabilisation is good, managing to stay pretty steady even when I was deliberately shaking the phone a lot, but the footage is a little soft and very light on detail. A few specifics are worth noting. The Motorola Moto G50 has a rear finger fingerprint scanner, rather than one mounted on the side. It works well, is fast enough and reliable. I find it hard to care too much about this when the iPhone 12 Pro Max costs more than four times as much and still has a huge notch. But bear it in mind if you prefer the punch hole style, seen in the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite and Oppo A54 5G.Admittedly, it was an overcast day when I got my usual church shot in, but even with that allowance made, the image is a touch disappointing. It all looks okay(ish) from a distance… Motorola Moto G50 was released in April 2021 which is a good budget 5G smartphone. but zoom in, and you’ll see a worrying amount of noise especially around the windows. That doesn’t bode well for low-light conditions, but at sunset the Moto G50 coped reasonably well, all things considered. Here’s a shot of my garden as the sun began to recede.
Display
Bear in mind if you're a keen gamer, you've only got 64GB of storage to play with, so you may wish to take advantage of the ability to add a microSD card to bump up your storage space. This does mean it can feel a bit excessive for those with small hands though, with a bit of stretching needed when reaching for the fingerprint sensor in particular. The Moto G50 camera is different, though. This phone has a triple camera array, but it feels like a single camera one because there is no zoom or ultra-wide lens. While there's no wireless charging support here or the ability to use reverse charging, the Moto G50 does offer 15W charging, which is faster than some low-end phones. Although, weirdly, the charger it comes bundled with doesn't support it, so you'll need to buy a separate one to enjoy speedier recharges.
Some regions are expected to have a 128GB version of the Moto G50, but we weren't able to get our hands on that. Battery lifeThe main thing you'll be looking at is the 6.5-inch display. This sounds immediately attractive when you consider it offers a 90Hz refresh rate, but there's a catch, as its resolution is pretty low at 720 x 1600. In ordinary use this may well not bother you, but it's a clear example of a price cutting endeavor going on here.
