Choosing the right bedding is crucial when providing a comfortable and hygienic living environment for your guinea pigs. Pine shavings, on the other hand, stay fairly lightweight, even when soiled, so emptying your coop is much easier. People use this method because (a) it keeps their coops slightly warmer in the winter (heat is released during the bacterial breakdown of the bedding) and (b) the bedding can later be used as a rich compost for the garden. Again, pine shavings are a more absorbent bedding type than most other organic materials, which means this problem is only compounded in these other materials. Weed suppression: Pine shavings can help to suppress weed growth by blocking out sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating. However, if you have a small coop, this might not be that big of a problem because your chickens aren’t scratching around in the coop as much.
