About this deal

Choosing the right bedding is crucial when providing a comfortable and hygienic living environment for your guinea pigs. Pine shavings, on the other hand, stay fairly lightweight, even when soiled, so emptying your coop is much easier. People use this method because (a) it keeps their coops slightly warmer in the winter (heat is released during the bacterial breakdown of the bedding) and (b) the bedding can later be used as a rich compost for the garden. For more information on using sawdust, wood shavings, or wood chips in your coop, check out my article, A comparison of 21+ chicken coop bedding materials. If you scoop up bedding with the fine tine pitchfork, most of the clean bedding will fall through the tines—so easy to scoop the poop out!

It causes too much dust for the coop, and it may cause serious respiratory problems in your chickens. It’s still there, and since chickens love to root around, the old droppings will most likely catch their eye, and they will peck at it. The quality varies from fleece to fleece, but the guinea pig fleece bedding generally provides a softer texture for the guinea pig's feet.

Washable bedding has distinct advantages and disadvantages, so weigh these up before choosing this option. Pine shavings are organic, so they are definitely going to break down—and this is why you are able to compost them. Additionally, pine shavings can be high in carbon, which can deplete nitrogen in the soil if not balanced properly.

There is also some concern that pine shavings may contain harmful chemicals, such as phenols, which can be harmful to both plants and humans. Again, pine shavings are a more absorbent bedding type than most other organic materials, which means this problem is only compounded in these other materials. Overall, if you are wondering whether pine shavings are good for your garden, it depends on your specific needs and preferences. This allows plant roots to grow more easily, absorb water more efficiently, and access nutrients more readily.

Weed suppression: Pine shavings can help to suppress weed growth by blocking out sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating. However, if you have a small coop, this might not be that big of a problem because your chickens aren’t scratching around in the coop as much. By taking steps to mitigate these risks, such as using cedar shavings or a pest control product, you can enjoy the benefits of pine shavings without attracting pests to your garden.
