During the Nazi period of Germany, interned people in the concentration camp system were often made to wear prisoner's uniforms. In federal prisons, this concept was introduced in the form of khaki pants and shirts, still in use. A mix-match of styles and garments worn by this group of men, photographed in 1983 at San Bruno Jail in California, exemplifies the drastic variety, between penal facilities, of access to uniform materials. Former sheriff Joe Arpaio with a pair of the pink underwear he notoriously introduced to the men's uniform at Tent City Jail, in Arizona.

It makes an excellent party theme, but can also be used for corporate events, Halloween, festivals, nights out and any other excuse to dress up as a criminal gang! Introducing clothing manufacturing as a new system of labor within the prisons and jails themselves, the actual clothing that was being produced and worn now mimicked the general, modest style of the times: plain gowns for women, two-piece outfits of linen in the summertime for men, and of wool in the winter, with access to jackets and coats ( source). Based on the uniforms worn in American prisoners (and as a result pretty much everything we see in movies), this outfit is ideal for themed parties, hen parties or any other occasion where you fancy looking like a fugitive. The orange jump suit has also become an international symbol of abuse and propagandized by groups such as ISIS. Every prisoner who is not allowed to wear his own clothing shall be provided with an outfit of clothing suitable for the climate and adequate to keep him in good health. If a prisoner cannot afford to have his own clothing cleaned and/or replaced, they may be issued with clothing. Rewind more than twenty years to the mid-1990s, when former Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio notoriously instituted pink underwear for incarcerated citizens of Tent City jail in Maricopa County (which is now closed). In my line of work I have designed food packging for prisons, one of the design criteria is that none of the packaging can be used as a weapon. Fair treatment of prisoners and a growing number of non-violent, working-class offenders prompted such a change in attitudes, and clothing and conditions changed to serve the concept of rehabilitation rather than punishment. The broad arrow-marked uniforms of the preceding century were used until 1922, [13] with the replacement taking the form of a plain suit (jacket, waistcoat, and trousers) worn with a collared shirt and a tie; footwear consisted of woollen socks and black leather shoes.

For a simple but effective bad guy appearance, ladies will be a fan of our Black and White Prisoner Outfit, whilst guys can go for the matching couples’ look with this Men’s Convict Outfit. Blue jeans and light blue denim or chambray work shirts became the norm, a tradition still followed in some state prison systems today. Some prisons do not use them at all, some prisons use them only for some inmates (depending on conviction of crime or behavior), and some prisons make uniforms compulsory. Just put on the prison stripe patterned pants and numbered shirt, and the matching striped cap, and you'll look like you've just staged a breakout!
