Brian lives alone in a remote village in the countryside. Something of an outcast, he spends his spare time inventing things out of found objects in his garage. A lot of people thought Steve Coogan or Chris Morris were behind it. I thought: “I’ll take that!” As soon as people found out it was me, it felt like the joke was finished. I think so. The film that’s made me cry the most is The Bridges of Madison County. I absolutely adore that film and always return to it as a reference point. Nominated in the “Outstanding British Film” category at the prestigious BAFTA's Awards this weekend, it will be in the running alongside the likes of Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical and Living. The plot is centred around the themes of happiness, loneliness and good fun as the life of an inventor who lives a solitary existence in north Wales is turned upside down.He decides to build a robot for some companionship, and showcases both twins - Lowri as Katrina and Mari as Suki - who are the daughters of the antagonist. The pair are now also in development with Sky regarding a story based on their own lives in Bridgend growing up in a working class environment with hidden disabilities.

Happiness, loneliness and silliness come together in this startling emotional adventure developed by writer-performers David Earl and Chris Hayward from their 2017 short film of the same name, and directed by Jim Archer. The film is partly about an AI robot called Charles. But thankfully, unlike a lot of serious sci-fi, this film doesn’t demand that we wonder whether or not AI robots are capable of independent thought or if you can fall in love with them, etc, etc. Charles, a free-thinking robot, is burdened with many things, but an ontological crisis isn’t one of them. It can't be long before someone releases a biopic of George Michael, the Wham-frontman-turned-solo-megastar. But in the meantime, this documentary covers his rise to fame, his evolution from pop pin-up to Grammy-winning musician, his achievements as a gay-rights activist and altruist, and his arrests for drug offences and public lewdness. The film has been billed as "deeply autobiographical", as Michael himself was working on it with co-director David Austin before he died in 2016 at the age of 53. But it includes tributes from his many famous fans, including Liam Gallagher, who calls him a "modern-day Elvis" and Tony Bennett, who says that Michael "raised the bar to a whole new level".One of the best films of 2020, Host was a low-budget found-footage horror movie which put a demonic twist on all of our pandemic-related fears. The follow-up from the same director, Rob Savage, and his co-writers, Gemma Hurley and Jed Shepherd, sinks its teeth into the same vein. Shot on an iPhone, the film purports to be drawn from a livestream by a Los Angeles-based musician (Annie Hardy). An outspoken Covid-denier and anti-masker, she flies to London to escape US restrictions and ends up giving an old woman (Angela Enahoro) a lift through the countryside in a friend's car. But the woman is not quite as harmless as she first appears. "Savage, Hurley, and Shepherd have once again proven a canny ability to tap into the darkest corners of the zeitgeist while producing genuinely entertaining and chilling horror," says Jude Dry at IndieWire. "Equal parts confounding, challenging, and insanely fun, Dashcam is horror at its most inventive." Definitely. When we were writing, my boy was about 15, so I was going through all that. Struggling with the pain of letting go and that push-pull relationship. So I took quite a lot of scenes from our life. In fact my boy came to the premiere and said: “Oh my God, that’s you and me.” I was like: “Hell, yeah. I vented in this film, don’t worry about that.” No, it was a really sweet moment. This has marked an important moment for them, as they have both experienced different barriers having grown up with the same heart condition, as well as being neuro-divergent. Their idea was chosen to be part of their Sky comedy shorts for which they are still in the scriptwriting phase. When we made the short film version in 2017, I remember saying: “Well, that’ll get 200 views on YouTube.” But it got a really nice response and Film4 asked us to develop it into a feature. The pair spoke at a BAFTA-organised Q&A event at Bridgend's Odeon venue about the film's success on Sunday, February 12, and realised the reality had still not quite hit home yet for their parents. It’s about this gang of clowns who find themselves in a strange situation. We filmed it this spring in Ireland. It’s kind of a road movie, heading towards this ridiculous climax. I’m wearing a red nose for most of it, so I’m in disguise again.Brian is a creative man who loves to build things. Is that a passion you share? Is there anything you'd love to try to invent? This is a fun and quirky movie. It has a slow start and a lot of kids will think it's boring at first. But once the Charles character is introduced it becomes a lot of fun. There are some bullies and it can be scary and frustrating as they do their bullying, but they are sorted out hilariously. Charles turns into a robotic moody teenager at one point. As a father of three, was that based on your own parenting experiences? Perhaps it's because everything in her film, no matter how heightened, is rooted in a real place, whether it's the feelings of the characters or even the music - it does, indeed, feel as its initial intertitle suggests like a “land not so far away”. I think it's about finding equity in roles rather than preaching equality. It's about the crossover of the whole industry rather than pigeonholing people. For instance, making it possible for disabled people to apply for able-bodied roles."
